The Water and Fire Spring is also known as the ‘Water and Fire Stream”. Located inside the Guanziling Scenic Area, southwest of Zhengtoushan, its fires burning on water were discovered in the 40th year of the Kangxi Period Qing Dynasty (1701) and never died off. This area is located on the ridge of the Liuchong Creek fault. The rock layers cracked and the natural gas hiding deep underground surged along the faults and rocks. Mountain springs flow from the cracks in the rocks and fire blazes from the water without smoke or flames. This is the amazing “fire in water”phenomenon. The fire is gradually shifting upward in the recent years. This is an amazing wonder of the nature. In 1993, the Tainan County Government named the Water and Fire Spring as the icon of Tainan County with the meaning of tolerance and thriving, and reorganized the hawker stalls into a business street with car parks to renew the services of this popular scenic area.
