Dadongshan is the highest mountain in Tainan City. Marked 1,239 meters above sea level, this mountain is the natural border of Tainan City and Chiayi County. Seas of clouds linger on top of the mountain all year round, creating a spectacular. The temperature is constantly low; that is why the mountain is called Dadongshan (the frozen mountain). From the peak of the mountain you can capture the entire view of Tainan City. The view extends as far as the Taiwan Strait when the weather is good.
The west col of the mountain is home to the Guanziling Hot Springs. The famous Zhengtoushan, a treasure trove of raw firestones, is also on the west side of Dadongshan. Although this mountain is not high, its cliffs are steep and valleys secluded. Both Daxian and Biyun Buddhist Monasteries are on Dadongshan.
The southwest view of Dadongshan resembles a lion crouching on the ground; therefore, Dadongshan is also called the “Lion Head Mountain”. Its primary forests and natural habitats are well preserved. Hiking trails on the mountain can be accessed from the hot spring area. Groups of hikers traverse the area all year round. A complete trip takes around three hours. Hot springs welcome visitors at the exit of the trail, offering one of the most enjoyable experiences in the Baihe area.
